Not for the faint of heart; to self distribute.
First, ask yourself if you want to put yourself through-it? Yes, through it. Because it’s going to take a lot of time. And a lot of energy.
Second, is this something you are good at and passionate at doing? Some people enjoy selling. Being on the road. Promoting. Some people don’t. They’re creators. They want to be on set producing, directing or otherwise be engaged in the process of the making of their film.
Distribution is it’s own thing. And while it’s very much part of the filmmaking ecosystem, it’s a specialized job.
If you plan to self distribute, surround yourself with people who’ve done it before. Get a good publicist. Figure out how and to which market(s) you’ll be distributing. There’s a lot that will go into it…
… and if you plan making self distribution part of your plan, then start the planning before you start making the film. Because once it’s made, it may be too late.
