Recently we chatted with Andrew van den Houten, indie producer, and we went into depth on the art of pitching.
One of the take aways that is clearly applicable to pretty much everyone is the length of the pitch.
A pitch is not a monologue and it shouldn’t go on for 45 minutes. It’s not a beat by beat. It’s just enough to get the concept out. Set up your characters, world, story. Then it’s a transition from the big picture into the details.
Don’t start with the details. Take the time to get there.
Ideally, you should be able to articulate the big picture in about a minute or two. If you can’t do that, then there’s something not working with the concept. Start to peal away the layers and engage in a conversation.
Now play!
