Feature films have a half-life. Short films have an even shorter half-life. Understand the value of what a short film is.
If you are in film school, it’s a learning tool. If you are trying to break into feature films, it’s the opportunity cost of your time and money. The time that it’s taking away from your developing a feature film – which has value in the market. And the money that it’s taking away from what could be going towards a feature film.
The barrier to entry, yes, is small. We all know that. If you are first time film maker, there is a good case to made that you’ll need something to show. Proof that you can actually tell a story in images. But proof doesn’t mean years and it doesn’t mean dollars. It just means proof.
If you are going to make short. Spend little. Be fast. Move on.
