Steve Cosens–for whom I said something moderately controversial–is a great DP. But let’s get back to this controversial issue: in my interview, as you’ll see right off the top, I refer to him as the “Canadian Roger Deakins”. Steve rightly backed off and said “whoa, whoa, careful now”, cause he’s a genuinely modest guy and really holds–like everyone–Deakins in a special and near-holy light. That being said, I meant what I said. This guy consistently lights and shoots beautiful, rock solid images with that wholesome, wrapped light. Though there is always a specificity of style and tone to each movie, he’s consistent within certain realistic parameters. But it’s more than that that makes Cosens special. He focuses on framing and composition first. To put it simply, he knows “what works”. He’s damn, damn good. If you’re a producer, and you have the chance to hire Steve Cosens on your movie–you should hire Steve Cosens on your movie. I can’t put it more bluntly than that. His talent is A-List.
